Northumbria is a really great place to visit in England as  it has a considerable history behind it. You can see how much of the past runs through this region and you will be quite surprised and the kind of ancient monuments that you can find here.

Most castles in Northumbria have some story or another to tell. This one is no different -  Chillingham Castle. This is a medieval castle located in Chillingham village. Until the 1980s it was owned by the Earls of Tankerville.  During the medieval period, this castle was repeatedly raided by the Scots as it had such a strategic location.

However, as relations between England and Scotland became normal, this castle was used by monarchs as a stay, during their visitors. Gradually all battlement features were reduced and in course of time, it came to include a banquet hall and even a library.

It was during the 180’s that the castle came into the ownership of Sir Humphry Wakefield, 2nd Baronet. He took over the work of restoration and his efforts resulted in a huge restoration of the entire place. Parts of the castle are open to the public for viewing and it is possible for people to rent apartments here.

If you are someone into visiting historical venues, you definitely would be having a whole list of castles in your list. Check out the Bamburgh Castle in Northumbria.

So what is so spectacular about this castle? Well, this castle is perched at 150 feet above sea line, at the edge of the North Sea at Bamburgh. You can get a magnificent view of the coastline, the Farne Islands and the Holy Island from here.

The castle has an interesting history behind it. It was a key English outpost in the past and was raided by the Scots from time to time. In the 16th century, the castle was first managed by the Forster family of Northumberland and in due course of time, it came to be owned by them. However, when Sir William Forster dies with bankruptcy, ownership of this imposing structure passed into the hands of Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham.

Though the castle was raved by time and also the war, various steps have been taken to renovate it. Chief efforts in renovations have been done by Lord Armstrong, in the latter part of the 1900’s. Areas of the castle that were renovated through his efforts include the Court Room, Faire Chamber, Cross Hall, King’s Hall and the Crewe Entrance Hall. Much of the art works in these rooms include historical woodwork, artwork, period furniture and an excellent collection of brass artifact and porcelain works.

Such renovations have enabled to maintain it and upkeep it, so that the structure does not deteriorate. Much of its historical value has been preserved through such maintenance efforts.
