In Tyneside I found ancient Rome in a seaside resort. In addition I found there scope for a lot of surfing, a hotel with a peaceful view of the ocean liners and the romantic ruins of a Priory on the cliffs above. The metro service from Newcastle took me to South Shields and the mouth of the Tyne. There in the high street area I saw the second oldest life boat displayed as a sculpture of human achievement. My hotel Little Haven was nearby. From there I took rides to the ocean Beach Pleasure Park. From there to the Victorian public park. There is a miniature railway there. The children enjoyed the ride. Here was also the dazzling beach of clear white sand. From beach to hotel I came across a set of sculptures called “The Conversation Piece”.The view of the Tynemouth Priory from the hotel is really tempting. Tynemouth is a pretty place. It’s cafes, white beach and surfing give you a really unforgettable experience. Even the old and derelict 1930s paddling pool has terrific attraction for the photographers. From Tynemouth I went back to South Shields. The brown signs of a “Roman Fort” led me to the middle of a Victorian housing estate. And there it was. The Gatehouse, the Governor’s villa and the barracks had been reconstructed. But all these stayed on their original Roman foundations. Extremely interesting for the kids and for the adults too.
